About the museum
The Jan Wałach Museum has operated since 2008 in the hamlet of Andziołówka in Istebna. It is run by the Museum and the Jan Wałach Artist Association. Jan Wałach (1884–1979) was a painter, graphic artist and woodcut artist, a graduate of the Zakopane School of Wood Industry and of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by, among others, Józef Mehoffer and Julian Fałat. He continued his studies in Paris.
The museum is housed in a wooden studio from 1922, built of spruce logs in the style of regional architecture. During the artist's lifetime it was a painting workshop; today it is a biographical museum. Inside are furnishings, easels and Wałach's works: woodcuts, oil paintings, drawings, gouaches and prints created between 1902 and 1979.
The studio stands at the edge of a clearing, near an ancient linden tree that is a natural monument. The historic site also includes the artist's family home from around 1865, whose interior is not open to visitors, a well from 1930, a wayside shrine, and a barn with a deskal (a carved wooden gable board) from 2023. The museum organises, among other events, the Museum Night and the Jan Wałach Artists' Get-Togethers.
