About the museum
The museum is located in a historic complex of wooden buildings in Andziołówka, in the northern part of Istebna. It is connected with Jan Wałach (1884–1979), a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and master of the woodcut, a graduate of the Zakopane school of wood industry and of the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, who completed his studies in Paris and created in his native Istebna until the end of his life.
The oldest building in the complex is a wooden house from around 1865, rebuilt in 1911–1912, in which the artist lived with his family; its interior is not open to visitors. A few dozen metres away stands a studio from 1922, built of spruce beams in a construction referring to regional architecture. During the artist’s lifetime it served as his painting studio, and today it houses a biographical museum.
Inside the studio visitors can see furnishings, easels and works by the artist from 1902–1979: woodcuts, oil paintings, drawings, gouaches and prints. Nearby are a well from 1930, a wooden chapel and a barn with a decorated board (deskal) depicting the artist. The museum organises events such as the Museum Night (Noc Muzeów) and art workshops for children and young people.
