About the museum

The Izba Pamięci by the Cemetery of the Warsaw Insurgents is a branch of the Muzeum Warszawy (Warsaw Museum) devoted to the victims of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. It commemorates tens of thousands of residents of the capital who died in the fighting and in mass executions carried out by German units. It is also a space for reflection on the consequences of violence, radicalism and armed conflict.

The construction was initiated by the Społeczny Komitet do spraw Cmentarza Powstańców Warszawy (Social Committee for the Cemetery of the Warsaw Insurgents), chaired by Wanda Traczyk-Stawska. The foundation stone was laid in July 2021, and on 2 October 2026 the Izba was given its name. The complex was designed by the studio of Piotr Bujnowski. It is a concrete, monolithic block with a flat roof that appears to hover above the building. A smaller pavilion on the side of ul. Wolska houses a bookshop and an information point.

The central point of the main pavilion is the audiovisual installation by Krzysztof Wodiczko, “Głosy pamięci” (Voices of Memory), based on the accounts of witnesses and their relatives about the fate of the civilian population of Warsaw in 1944. The permanent exhibition in the “Sala Historii” (History Hall) tells the story of the Cemetery of the Warsaw Insurgents, the largest wartime necropolis in Poland, where more than 104,000 people are buried. On the Wall of Memory the names of tens of thousands of victims of the uprising are inscribed, and visitors can help to complete the missing names.
