About the museum
The Diving Museum (Muzeum Nurkowania) opened on 27 February 2006 on the initiative of Karina Kowalska and operates at the Warsaw Divers’ Club (Warszawski Klub Płetwonurków). Its opening launched the celebrations of the club’s fiftieth anniversary. The museum is in the basement of a pre-war building at ul. Grzybowska 88, built in 1930–1931 for the chemical-pharmaceutical laboratory “Asmidar”.
The collection numbers several hundred objects related to the history and technology of diving and to underwater archaeology. Most of the exhibits come from donations and private collections of club members and people connected with the diving community. The collections include, among others, a classic diving helmet from 1895, a Dräger breathing apparatus, a Soviet UGK diving suit and Polish diving suits, and there is a section devoted to underwater photography.
In addition to the permanent display, the museum organises meetings, film screenings and temporary exhibitions. A visit usually lasts about 45 minutes.
