About the museum

Stacja Muzeum was created on the initiative of PKP S.A. (Polish State Railways) and the Mazowiecki Urząd Marszałkowski (Mazovian Marshal’s Office) as a new cultural institution protecting the heritage of the Polish railway. Talks began in 2014; agreements were signed in October 2014 and in May 2015, and in June 2015 the Mazovian regional assembly (sejmik) liquidated the former Muzeum Kolejnictwa w Warszawie (Railway Museum in Warsaw) and established a new institution with a statute. The museum opened to visitors on 14 May 2016 during the Museums Night.

The seat is the closed Warszawa Główna Osobowa railway station at ul. Towarowa 3, where the institution is to remain until a modern seat is built. The institution inherited the valuable collections of the former museum, including objects unique on a European scale; they were secured, restored and became the basis of the narrative of the new exhibition.

The permanent exhibition shows the history of the railway in the world and in Poland, with particular emphasis on the Droga Żelazna Warszawsko-Wiedeńska (Warsaw–Vienna Railway) of 1845, a collection of about 200 rolling stock models and models of historic stations, and an interactive children’s room, “Jak działa kolej” (How the Railway Works). Outside, an open-air collection holds the largest number of historic rail vehicles in one place in Poland.
