About the museum
The Muzeum Woli was established in 1974, although the idea of a district museum was much older: already in the 1930s it was proposed by the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Woli (Society of Friends of Wola), active since 1916. At its founding it was the only institution in Warsaw dealing with the history of a single district. The first permanent exhibition took visitors through the history of Wola from earliest times. In 1996 a new exhibition, “Warszawska Wola 1367–1996” (Warsaw’s Wola 1367–1996), was opened, supplemented two years later by a collection of silver-plated objects from the collection of Aniela and Tadeusz Wysiadecki.
In 2013 the existing exhibitions were closed and the museum concentrated on temporary exhibitions and cultural activities. In 2016 a thorough renovation of the building at ul. Srebrna began, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, and in December 2019 the museum reopened. It now has two large exhibition rooms, a modern education room and a workshop room, and the building is adapted for people with disabilities.
The permanent element of the exhibition is the Gabinet Wolski (Wola Cabinet), a casket telling the many-threaded history of the district in fifteen themes, including early modern Wola and royal elections, trade at Kercelak, social housing, and the Warsaw Uprising and the massacre of Wola. The museum also runs museum lessons, meetings, workshops and walks around the district.
