About the museum

The Icon Museum in Warsaw is a branch of the Warsaw Orthodox Metropolitan Museum (Muzeum Warszawskiej Metropolii Prawosławnej). It was established on the initiative of the Orthodox Metropolitan of Warsaw and all Poland, Archbishop Sawa, and of the expert on Eastern rite culture Michał Bogucki. It was opened on 29 November 2011 in a converted building of a former boiler house at ul. Lelechowska; it is the first institution of this type in Warsaw and the third in Poland, after Sanok and Supraśl.

The museum consists of two parts. The main one is the Orthodox chapel of St Gregory Peradze, Archimandrite and Martyr, with an iconostasis and elements of church decoration, the icons of Grzegorz Zinkiewicz, icons from the Iconographic Studio in Bielsk Podlaski, reproductions of frescoes by Jerzy Nowosielski and designs for stained-glass windows by Adam Stalona-Dobrzański. In 2012–2015 the Akademia Ikony (Icon Academy) operated at the museum.

According to municipal cultural portals, the exhibition includes icons coming mainly from Russia, Greece and the Balkans from the 17th–20th centuries, including festive icons and narrative compositions, each with a commentary. The museum is run by a church cultural institution and does not regularly publish visiting hours, so telephone contact is recommended before a visit.
