About the museum
The Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Silesian Medical University in Katowice opened on 12 December 2018. It is located on the premises of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec at ul. Ostrogórska 30 and is a university-wide unit; according to its own regulations, it is not a museum within the meaning of the Museums Act. It serves as a teaching aid for students and is also open to visitors.
The collections were gathered over many years. In January 2013 the rector appointed a team which prepared a catalogue of the university's memorabilia in medicine and pharmacy and looked for new exhibits among the academic community and the families of former doctors and pharmacists. Preparations gathered pace in December 2017, on the eve of the university's 70th anniversary.
The exhibition comprises a foyer display, “Od pasieki do apteki” (From Apiary to Pharmacy), and eight rooms: a pharmacy room, a former pharmacy, a 20th-century operating room, two medicine rooms, a former operating theatre, a herbarium and a diagnostic laboratory. The collections document the achievements of Silesian and Dąbrowa Basin medicine and the work of the doctors and pharmacists who practised here: documents, photographs, books, vessels, pharmacy and medical equipment, preparations, implants and prostheses.
