About the museum
The mother house of the Congregation of the Carmelite Sisters of the Infant Jesus in Sosnowiec is the first house of the congregation, founded in 1921 by Fr Anzelm Gądek OCD and the Venerable Servant of God Teresa Kierocińska. The sisters, together with Mother Teresa, moved into this place in September 1925. There they lived a life of prayer and work, and at various times also ran a day nursery (ochronka), a school, a kindergarten, embroidery and sewing courses, a children’s home and a health post.
During the Second World War the sisters protected girls from deportation to Germany, helped soldiers of the Home Army (AK), ran secret teaching and a kitchen for the poor, and rescued children and adults of Jewish origin. Mother Teresa Kierocińska was awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations.
The museum in the historic house shows the life and work of Mother Teresa and the history of the congregation. Visitors pass through a reception area with a multimedia chronicle, the sacristy, the Chapel of St Teresa of the Infant Jesus, a room devoted to Janina Kierocińska’s childhood in Wieluń, an auditorium with a biographical film, Mother Teresa’s cell with original objects, a reconstructed school room and sewing workshop, and a room of charitable activity. The tour ends at the sarcophagus of Mother Teresa in the convent church.
