About the museum
The exhibition was created at the place where, on 26 March 2011, an old staff was found during construction work in Karpacz, which became known as the staff of the Spirit of the Mountains. The discovery aroused great interest among residents and the media. The object itself went to the collection of the Muzeum Domu Carla i Gerharta Hauptmannów in Szklarska Poręba, a branch of the Muzeum Karkonoskie in Jelenia Góra.
The find became the starting point of the project Podziemne Królestwo Ducha Gór (Underground Kingdom of the Spirit of the Mountains). The initiator of the venture is Jakub Paczyński; the interiors were designed by artists including Dariusz Miliński, Igor Morski and Wiktor Wiktorczyk.
The exhibition is located in the cellars of the building at ul. Mickiewicza and leads visitors through twelve stories about the legendary and historical past of the Karkonosze: about herbalists, mineral prospectors and the mandrake. A highlight of the exhibition is a sculpture of the Spirit of the Mountains, more than seven metres tall. The attraction won a title in the National Geographic competition “7 New Wonders of Poland”.
