About the museum
The building that houses the museum was erected by the residents of Karpacz through voluntary labour, on land granted by the municipality, in 1932–1936. From the beginning it was intended for museum purposes: a Regional Museum was set up here, with an exhibition on the region including a Silesian cottage, graphics of Karkonosze plants, tools of herbalists and a mandrake root. After the Second World War it was opened to visitors.
Efforts to re-establish the institution began in 1971, and on 3 September 1974 the Muzeum Sportu i Turystyki Regionu Karkonoszy (Museum of Sport and Tourism of the Karkonosze Region) opened as a branch of the Muzeum Sportu i Turystyki w Warszawie. Since 1 January 2003 it has been an independent cultural institution of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship self-government.
The permanent exhibition has three sections: the origins and development of tourism in the Karkonosze, the development of winter sports and Olympism, and nature conservation. It shows, among other things, a collection of participation medals from the Winter Olympic Games from 1928 to 2018, a medal from the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, Olympic torches, and memorabilia connected with Tadeusz Różewicz and Renata Mauer-Różańska.
