About the museum

The “Barwy Śląska” Gallery was established as a venue for the collection assembled by Stanisław Gerard Trefoń, who has been gathering works by non-professional painters from Silesia since 1952. It opened on 4 December 2006 in the former palace of the Henckel von Donnersmarck family in Nakło Śląskie. In 2010 the collections were moved to Ruda Śląska, to premises at ul. Młyńska 16 in the Halemba district.

The collection is looked after by the “Barwy Śląska” Association. It contains more than 2,800 oil paintings, watercolours, linocuts and prints, supplemented by several hundred sculptures in coal and wood and mugs from individual mines. In total the works are by more than 300 artists.

A permanent exhibition of paintings and sculptures by intuitive artists is shown in several exhibition rooms; archival information puts the number of works on display at more than 1,200. The collection includes works by, among others, Teofil Ociepka, Paweł and Leopold Wróbel, Erwin Sówka, Rudolf Riedl and Władysław Łuciński.
