About the museum
The Sztolnia Królowa Luiza complex was built on the site of a former mine whose origins go back to the late 18th century. It includes the workings of the Królowa Luiza mine and the Główna Kluczowa Sztolnia Dziedziczna (Main Key Hereditary Adit), as well as post-industrial buildings and grounds such as the Łaźnia Łańcuszkowa (Łańcuszkowa Bathhouse) and the Strefa Carnall (Carnall Zone). The complex has received the prestigious Europa Nostra award.
The adit and the former mine now belong to the Muzeum Górnictwa Węglowego w Zabrzu (Coal Mining Museum in Zabrze). The best-known attraction is the Podziemny Spływ Sztolnią (Underground Boat Trip Through the Adit), recognised as the longest such trip in Europe. The route “Podziemna Podróż w Czasie” (Underground Journey Through Time) leads from the times when Upper Silesia was covered in dense forests, through the beginnings of mining. The “Podziemne Królestwo Maszyn” (Underground Kingdom of Machines) displays steel mining machines weighing up to 22 tonnes and allows a ride on the mining railway “Karlik”.
On the surface there are theme parks: Park 12C, an interactive space for families where visitors learn about the forces of the earth and the secrets of coal extraction, and the Park Techniki Wojskowej (Military Technology Park). Other routes include the Podziymnŏ Rajza (an underground trip in Silesian dialect), the Rodzinna Szychta (Family Shift) and the Droga Górnika (Miner’s Way).
