About the museum
The bunkers at Konewka, located in the forests of the Spała Landscape Park about 4 km from Spała, were built in 1940–1941 as part of the German command complex “Anlage Mitte”. Construction followed the establishment of the Ober-Ost command headquarters in Spała at the end of 1939. The main structure, a reinforced-concrete railway bunker 380 m long, was meant to house entire trains of staff. Smaller technical bunkers with generators, a boiler room, a pumping station and a water intake were built alongside.
The Germans did not use the complex for its intended purpose, because the front quickly moved east. In 1944 the bunkers served as stores and as workshops repairing aircraft engines, and at the end of the war as a depot for bombs and ammunition. In January 1945 the garrison left Konewka without a fight, and the facilities were not blown up. After the war sappers removed the bombs that had been left behind; in the 1950s the bunkers served as warehouses, and from the 1970s until the end of the 20th century they were used by the military.
The “Bunkier w Konewce” (Bunker at Konewka) tourist route was created in 2005. Visitors see the railway bunker with an exhibition of militaria, military vehicles and models of bunkers and German trains, the technical bunkers and, in the summer season, an 80-metre underground service tunnel. Bats hibernate in the bunkers, so the tunnel is closed in winter.
