About the museum
The Regional Museum in Opoczno began operating on 1 January 1976, after years of efforts by local activists. The premises chosen were the fourteenth-century castle of King Casimir the Great, located within the former town walls on the river Drzewiczka. The castle was repeatedly damaged by fires and wars; in the early seventeenth century it was partly rebuilt, and in 1655 it suffered during the Swedish Deluge.
The core of the collection was 225 exhibits gathered by the Friends of the Opoczno Land Museum Society. The collection was supplemented by ethnographic purchases, donations from folk craftspeople (including the cooperative “Opocznianka”) and transfers from other museums in Poland. The first exhibitions opened on 5 June 1976 in four rooms on the upper floor of the castle. Over time departments were created for history, ethnography, art, numismatics and archaeology, as well as a scholarly library.
The museum is now a municipal cultural institution of the Gmina Opoczno. Its permanent exhibitions present the history of the Opoczno Land from the Bronze Age to the twentieth century, the period of the Second World War, the heritage of Opoczno ceramics, folk sculpture, a reconstructed village room and Opoczno folk costumes. The institution also runs museum lessons, workshops and temporary exhibitions, and in September 2026 it celebrated its 50th anniversary.
