About the museum
The first efforts to establish a museum in Rawa were made in the 1960s by the Society of Friends of the Rawa Land Museum. The nucleus of the institution opened on 12 May 1963 in the reconstructed Tower of the Castle of the Dukes of Masovia, but space there was very limited. The Rawa Land Museum was formally established by resolution of 26 November 1965, and the official opening took place in 1966 in rooms of the former Jesuit college next to the late Baroque church.
In 1981 the museum moved to the villa at ul. Łowicka, built in 1930 for the director of the Rawa Agricultural Syndicate (Rawski Syndykat Rolniczy). After adaptation it reopened in December 1984. The permanent exhibitions here are the Numismatic Cabinet, showing the history of money in the Polish lands from antiquity to the 1990s (including local coin hoards), and the Rawa Room (Izba rawska) from the early 20th century, with the furnishings of a peasant cottage.
The museum also includes two other sites. In the municipal shambles at ul. Mickiewicza 11, built in 1827 and renovated in 2018–2020, there is a permanent exhibition on the former butchers' shambles; the building also houses educational workshops and a library. The Tower of the Castle of the Dukes of Masovia, a remnant of the medieval fortress of the Masovian dukes from the 14th century, houses an exhibition on the history of the castle against the background of the history of the town and region.
