About the museum

The Muzeum Afrykanistyczne (Africanist Museum) was established in 1971 from a donation by Dr Bogdan Szczygieł and his wife Bożena, who gave the people of Olkusz a collection of objects from Africa. The collection was added to by further donors. For years the museum has been part of the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury w Olkuszu (Municipal Culture Centre) and is housed in the Centrum Kultury building at ul. Szpitalna 32.

The exhibition shows the everyday life of the peoples of West and Central Africa. Objects associated with the Tuareg, Dogon, Bambara and Buszongo hold a special place; many of them were used in ceremonies and magical rites, which gives the collection a strong sense of authenticity. Visitors can see decorated masks, fetishes, musical instruments, weapons, traditional costumes and children’s toys.

A separate group consists of ornaments made of ivory and malachite, and of African paintings. A separate part of the collection, opened in 2007, consists of gifts from Prof. Anna Kubarska and pilot Leon Kubarski, comprising paintings, sculptures and other objects of African art.
