About the museum
The Muzeum Twórczości Władysława Wołkowskiego holds the largest collection of art by Władysław Wołkowski (1902–1986), a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, who was called the “Michelangelo of wicker” (Michał Anioł wikliny). The artist was a pioneer of modern design, and his works were shown at many exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including in Berlin, New York, London and Paris, where they received a gold medal at the World Exhibition of 1937. After the war he co-founded Polish basketry and was the author of the concept of the so-called poetic dwelling (mieszkanie poetyckie).
The collections are housed in the historic Machnicki Manor House (Dworek Machnickich) at ul. Szpitalna in Olkusz, in the building of the Culture Centre, which is run by the Municipal Culture Centre (Miejski Ośrodek Kultury). Visitors can see innovative furniture made of wicker, reed, wood and string, platters, tapestries, portraits and landscapes in wicker, images of Slavic deities and figures from fairy tales and history, as well as altar compositions devoted, among other things, to the Warsaw Uprising, the Battle of Grunwald and the relief of Vienna.
Particularly remarkable are the “Polish strojeńce” (decorative textiles), large colourful tapestries and carpets. The collection also includes sketches, drawings and notes by the artist, as well as elements of the furnishing of the poetic dwelling. Some works refer to important figures and events in Polish history, others to folk art and the natural world.
