About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Sławkowie (Sławków Regional Museum) was established in 1976 on the initiative of the local branch of the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Ziemi Olkuskiej (Association of Friends of the Olkusz Land). It was initially housed in a historic inn at Rynek 2, and in 1984 it was moved to a merchant’s house from 1870 and incorporated into the Municipal Culture Centre as the Dział Kultury Dawnej (Department of Historical Culture).
In 2019–2021 the building was renovated and rebuilt under the project “Zagłębiowski Park Linearny” (Zagłębie Linear Park). Since 2021 it has housed the Centre for Ecological and Cultural Education, which combines the existing tasks of the Department of Historical Culture with ecological education and the promotion of the town’s natural values. The Centre also holds historical, ethnographic and archaeological collections connected with Sławków, and the building houses a tourist information point.
The permanent exhibitions include mining, crafts and trade, the ethnographic exhibition “W lamusie Zygmunta Glogera” (In Zygmunt Gloger’s Lamus), the results of archaeological research from 1983–1998 that led to the discovery of the ruins of one of the oldest defensive castles in southern Poland, the history of the Jews of Sławków, and the Sławków Republic of 1905. Exhibitions on independence activity in 1915 and on the Nazi occupation are also shown.
