About the museum
The Muzeum Pożarnictwa Ziemi Olkuskiej (Olkusz Land Fire Service Museum) has operated since 1978. It was founded to mark the 500th anniversary of the first documented mentions of the Olkusz fire brigade. Most of the collection was assembled by Stefan Ząbczyński (1920–1998), long-serving chairman of the Volunteer Fire Brigade (Ochotnicza Straż Pożarna) in Olkusz, after whom the institution is named.
The museum is at ul. Floriańska 8, a few dozen metres from the market square, in the same building as the tourist information point. The collection includes hand-operated fire pumps, horse-drawn fire wagons, a pre-war water tanker and motor pumps, as well as uniforms, helmets, axes and more than 30 banners. The oldest exhibit is an alarm bell from 1647, and among the most interesting is a historic fire engine from the Second World War, nicknamed “Jasiek”.
