About the museum

The Muzeum Agatów i Skamieniałych Drzew (Museum of Agates and Petrified Trees), also known as Galeria Poloński, opened in November 2005 as the first institution in Poland devoted to agates and petrified wood. Its founder is the collector Krzysztof Poloński, whose collection began with a single cracked blue agate from the area around Lwówek Śląski and Płóczki Górne. Today it contains more than ten thousand agates. In 2005 the collection was recognised as the most beautiful collection of agates in Poland.

The collection includes agates from Polish sites such as Płóczki Górne and Nowy Kościół, as well as from Argentina, Botswana, the Czech Republic, Morocco and Germany, and petrified wood from Roztocze, Upper Silesia, the Czech Republic, Madagascar and the United States. The most impressive exhibit is a Moroccan agate about 200 million years old, weighing about 35 kg.

Apart from the mineral collection, the museum has an exhibition of angling trophies, including a catfish over two metres long, a corner promoting nearby Zalipie and, in a special gallery, the largest black oak specimen in Poland, “Rob – Krzysz”, found in 2003.
