About the museum

The Muzeum Diecezjalne w Tarnowie (Diocesan Museum in Tarnów) was founded in 1888 by Father Józef Bąba, rector of the local theological seminary, and is considered the oldest diocesan museum in Poland. Initially the collections were housed in the seminary building, in the interwar period in the town hall, and today they occupy historic tenement houses from the 16th century beside the cathedral.

The complex consists of the former Akademiola, the first school in Tarnów, which was a branch of the University of Kraków; the Dom Mikołajowski (Mikołaj House) from 1524; the Dom Mansjonariuszy (House of the Chantry Priests); and the Scholasteria. The interiors house a gallery of medieval art, a vestment room (Sala Ornatów), a gallery of folk paintings on glass and a collector’s bourgeois salon.

The most important part of the collection is Gothic sculpture and painting from Lesser Poland, linked to the so-called Kraków–Sącz school (szkoła krakowsko-sądecka). The museum also has church textiles from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, folk art, and donations from collectors, including reverse-glass paintings by Norbert Lippóczy from 1957 and works by Polish painters from around 1900 from the donation of Olga Majewska. It also holds a collection of coins and medals handed over in 2019.
