About the museum

The Road Museum in Szczucin, officially the Road History Complex (Zespół Historii Drogownictwa), belongs to the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. It was established in 1982 as a memorial room at the local public roads district and grew as valuable exhibits were acquired. In May 1992 the voivodeship conservator of monuments entered the whole site in the register of monuments; since 2005 the unit has had the official name Zespół Historii Drogownictwa, although the colloquial name “Muzeum Drogownictwa” has remained in use.

The complex collects, protects and makes accessible monuments related to road building from all over Poland. The exhibition in the building tells the story of the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges: scenes with life-size figures at work on a construction site, documents, decorations, banners and depictions of roads and bridges in art. The museum also runs temporary exhibitions.

On a small hill next to the building is the open-air exhibition: a spiral trail about 1.5 km long, paved with stone setts and equipped with original road elements such as kerbs, culverts and gratings. More than 30 stations illustrate types of road surface from different eras, from the Cretan road to modern ones. Steam, combustion and towed rollers, boilers, crushers, snowplows, Mazur tractors and a narrow-gauge railway from the former brickworks in Szczucin with the locomotive WLs40 are on display. The main building and the outdoor area are linked by a 51-metre Bailey bridge, and the whole site covers over 2 hectares.
