About the museum
Zalipie, situated in the Powiśle Dąbrowskie region, is known for the tradition of painting houses and interiors with plant and flower patterns, cultivated for more than a hundred years. This decoration probably emerged at the end of the 18th century and was linked to the disappearance of smoke cottages (chaty dymne): women painted lime on the sooted walls in spots called “packi”, to brighten and beautify the rooms. The skill was most often passed on from mother to daughter.
The Felicja Curyło Farmstead (Zagroda Felicji Curyłowej), a branch of the Ethnographic Museum and of the Museum of the Tarnów Land, preserves the house of the outstanding painter Felicja Curyło (1903–1974), who promoted this folk art. The house has been kept in the form it had during her lifetime: in the entrance hall a black ceiling with white patterns painted in clay stands out, the walls are decorated with paper paintings (malowanki) and paper cut-outs (wycinanki), and in the kitchen stands a stove painted blue with plant motifs. A Powiśle costume made by the artist is also on display.
In the farmstead one can also visit the richly decorated cottage of Stefania Łączyńska, a poor cottage with a straw roof and painted outer walls, and a barn with agricultural and transport equipment; the ticket office and a workshop room are in the former cowshed. Every year, around Corpus Christi, the “Malowana Chata” (“Painted Cottage”) competition takes place here, co-organised by the Museum of the Tarnów Land since 1976.
