About the museum
The museum was established in 1971 on the initiative of activists of the peasant movement and the family of Wincenty Witos. The idea of founding it had already emerged in the 1960s, and one of its initiators was the attorney Stanisław Mierzwa. Witos was the leader of the peasant movement and three times prime minister of the Second Polish Republic.
The main part of the museum is the New Homestead (Nowa Zagroda), the farm built by Witos in 1905–1913. It consists of five wooden buildings: a residential house, two barns, a stable and a cellar. The complex underwent a conservation renovation in 1995–1997, and authentic interiors have survived in the house, including Witos’s study.
The second part is the Old Homestead (Stara Zagroda) in the hamlet of Dwudniaki, the family house of Witos built in the first half of the 19th century (according to the museum, in 1814). The building has a thatched roof, and its walls were plastered with clay; inside, the original furnishings and farming tools have been preserved. Since 2012 the house has belonged to the Friends of the Museum Society. The museum lies on the Wooden Architecture Trail of Lesser Poland (Szlak Architektury Drewnianej w Małopolsce).
