About the museum
The Muzeum Agatów w Rudnie (Agate Museum in Rudno) opened in 2020 on the volcanic hill Spalisko, at about 400 m above sea level, directly next to Tenczyn Castle. The idea for such a place came from the collector Witold Kopruch, who is also its curator. His collection numbers several thousand specimens obtained between 1980 and 2024 from the surrounding agate fields and from rock debris at a closed melaphyre quarry; the collection is continually being enriched and exchanged.
The exhibition rooms display cut and polished agates, amethysts, quartz and petrified wood. A supplement is a room with fossils from the Jurassic period, from nearby sites. The museum also has a multimedia and cinema room, where films about volcanism, agate hunting and the Jurassic age are shown, and where other collectors can present their own collections.
On site there is a workshop where agates are worked, and where a guide demonstrates cutting, grinding and polishing stones, as well as a shop selling minerals, jewellery and souvenirs. The museum also organises expeditions to the nearby agate fields, where visitors search for agates.
