About the museum

The Muzeum Pożarnictwa in Alwernia was founded on 4 May 1953 on the initiative of the pharmacist and captain Zbigniew Konrad Gęsikowski. For more than 70 years it was looked after by the volunteer firefighters of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in Alwernia (Ochotnicza Straż Pożarna w Alwerni). In 1999 the institution received the “Sybilla” award from the Minister of Culture for the conservation of a 1926 Mercedes fire engine, and in 2002 the Alwernia town council transformed it into a municipal cultural institution.

In 2020 a letter of intent was signed on the construction of a new seat and the incorporation of the museum into the Museum of Western Lesser Poland in Wygiełzów, which took place in 2023. The new building was erected in 2022–2023 and opened to visitors in May 2024; the investment was co-financed from the Małopolska Regional Operational Programme for 2014–2020.

The collection numbers more than 4000 objects. The most valuable part is the collection of historic fire vehicles, including horse-drawn and motor fire engines from the early 20th century, some of them in working order, regarded as significant on a European scale. The collections also contain medals, decorations, commemorative plaques, photographs, phaleristics and fire-service philately, and documents. The museum runs workshops for kindergartens and schools.
