About the museum
The Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne w Łodzi (Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź) has been housed for about 70 years in a historic 19th-century building on Plac Wolności, in the city centre. Earlier, the building housed, among others, the Szkoła Powiatowa Realna Niemiecko-Rosyjska (German-Russian county secondary school) and the Łódź municipal authority (magistrat). It is the largest museum institution in Łódź, with collections of about 300,000 objects related to archaeology, ethnography and numismatics.
In 2021 the first stage of modernisation was completed, in which the outbuildings and the courtyard were rebuilt at a cost of over PLN 30 million. Modern study stores, conservation workshops and educational rooms were created.
The modernisation of the main building is currently under way as part of the project “Muzeum Otwarte” (Open Museum). The permanent exhibitions are closed, and reopening to visitors is planned for 2028. Until then the museum runs an educational programme: classes for kindergartens and schools, family workshops, the series “Muzeum pod Lupą” (Museum under the Magnifying Glass), the Akademia Młodego Archeologa (Young Archaeologist’s Academy) and handicraft workshops.
