About the museum
For more than 50 years the Museum of the City of Łódź has gathered and presented collections devoted to the history of Łódź. Its main seat is the historic Palace of the Poznański Family, built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as the family residence and showpiece of the Poznański enterprise. The building is today one of the symbols of the development of Łódź, which in a few decades changed from a small town into an industrial metropolis.
In the palace one can see the private apartments and the representative interiors of the company’s seat. The exhibitions tell the story of the industrial history of Łódź, its multicultural heritage, architecture, art and crafts, and the everyday life of its residents and the achievements of outstanding inhabitants. The exhibition “Poznańscy: Pałac. Potęga. Pokolenia” (The Poznańskis: Palace. Power. Generations) on the first floor presents the history of the manufacturer’s residence and the family, and the Artur Rubinstein Music Gallery holds the largest collection in the world devoted to this pianist.
The museum also runs other branches: the Dętka Canal Museum (Muzeum Kanału “Dętka”) under Plac Wolności, open in the season from May to October, and the Museum of Sport and Tourism in the complex of the Łódź University of Technology. There are temporary exhibitions, workshops and events for various groups of visitors.
