About the museum

The Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź has a unique history. At the end of the 1920s and the beginning of the 1930s, artists of the “a.r.” group, among them Władysław Strzemiński, Katarzyna Kobro and Henryk Stażewski, and the poets Julian Przyboś and Jan Brzękowski, gathered as a gift from leading creators of the European avant-garde the International Collection of Modern Art (Międzynarodowa Kolekcja Sztuki Nowoczesnej). The collection was opened to the public on 15 February 1931.

After the Second World War, in 1948, the museum was moved to one of the palaces of the Poznański family at ul. Więckowskiego 36, and from 1950 it has operated under its present name. For about fifty years the permanent collection was shown in this building; it later gained a new home in ms² in the former weaving mill at ul. Ogrodowa.

Today the building at ul. Więckowskiego 36 (entrance from ul. Gdańska 43), called ms¹, serves as a place for experimenting with the phenomena of contemporary art. Temporary exhibitions, performance shows, workshops and lectures take place here. The building also houses a library with a reading room and a café.
