About the museum
The Muzeum Farmacji im. prof. Jana Muszyńskiego is housed in a tenement house at plac Wolności 2, where a pharmacy has operated without interruption since 1840, the first pharmacy in Łódź. The first Łódź pharmacy was set up in 1830 near the former Market Square of the New Town (Rynek Nowego Miasta); its owner was Karol Ketschen. Ten years later Bogumił Zimmermann bought the pharmacy and built a new tenement house for it, with a pharmacy hall on the ground floor and the pharmacist's flat on the upper floor. In 1893 the owner Kazimierz Leinweber added a second floor, an attic and side wings, giving the building its present shape.
The museum opened in 2008 in this historic place. On the ground floor a 19th-century dispensing room has been reconstructed, furnished with original period pharmacy furniture. On the upper floor there is a reconstruction of a former herb room, handwritten pharmacy manuals from the turn of the century, old containers for raw medicinal materials, scales, microscopes and other tools of pharmacists, as well as the first mass-produced medicines in their original packaging.
The museum is the first institution in Poland to be included in the European Cultural Route of Historic Pharmacies and Medicinal Plant Gardens (Europejski Szlak Kulturowy Historycznych Aptek i Ogrodów Roślin Leczniczych). It runs workshops, an outdoor game and classes for children, and its library gathers literature on old medicines and ways of treating illness.
