About the museum
The manor house in Romanów formerly belonged to the Sapieha family; in 1802 the estate was bought by Anna and Błażej Malski, the maternal grandparents of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The writer grew up here until the age of 15 and remembered the place as a lost paradise. The manor was later extended by his younger brother Kajetan, who gathered a collection of works of art, including eighty portraits of great Poles, and a large library.
In August 1943 the abandoned manor house burned down, set on fire by a Soviet partisan unit. In 1958 a decision was taken to establish a museum of the author of “Stara baśń” (The Old Tale) in Romanów. The reconstruction of the ruins was completed in 1962, and the museum opened on 28 July 1962. Further renovation work was carried out in 1987–1991 and in EU-funded projects, which restored the manor to its appearance from the second half of the 19th century, including a shingle roof.
The permanent exhibition presents the life and work of Kraszewski, his interests in music, painting, history, archaeology and collecting, and an attempt to recreate the interiors of the landed manor of the Malski and Kraszewski families. The collections include manuscripts, editions of the writer’s works, his drawings and watercolours, and personal souvenirs. Around the manor extends a park from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, with a manor chapel.
