About the museum

The idea of setting up a regional museum in Brusy emerged in 1980 among activists of the Zrzeszenie Kaszubsko-Pomorskie (Kashubian-Pomeranian Association), who wanted to preserve the heritage of their ancestors. The building was designed by engineer Jan Sabiniarz from Chojnice, and for financial reasons the construction work only took place in 2002–2004. The museum opened in 2005 in Brusy-Jaglie, about two kilometres from the centre of Brusy.

The cottage resembles the traditional buildings of southern Kashubia. It was erected by local craftsmen using their own labour: the timber structure was made of trees growing in the 19th-century Sikorski Park in Wielkie Chełmy, the roof is covered with reed, the external steps are of stone and the floors are of pine boards. The investor was the Brusy Town Office, and the museum operates within the gmina Centre of Culture and the Jan Karnowski Library (Biblioteka im. Jana Karnowskiego).

The exhibition shows about 400 souvenirs related to the history and material culture of the Zabór Land (Ziemia Zaborska), mostly collected from residents: old household objects and historic technical equipment, as well as a camera from the first photographic studio in Brusy. Temporary exhibitions are held in the cottage, and groups may take part in regional workshops. In the neighbouring garden stand sculptures and beehives by Józef Chełmowski.
