About the museum
In 1918–1919, when Poland was being reborn and its borders were still undecided, local Kashubians sought the incorporation of the Bytów Land into the Polish state. These efforts had no effect, and Kashubians who felt they were Poles became German citizens. In 1922 the founding congress of the Związek Polaków w Niemczech (Association of Poles in Germany) took place in Berlin, and the Bytów County became part of its 5th District.
Founding schools was an important way of preserving Polish identity. In the Bytów Land four institutions were created for the Polish minority: in Płotowo, Osława Dąbrowa, Ugoszcz and Rabacino. Only the school in Ugoszcz survived until September 1939; the others were closed after a few years as a result of repression. The Polish school in Płotowo operated in 1929–1932.
Today a museum operates on this site; it opened in 1979 as a branch of the West Kashubian Museum in Bytów. Visitors can see a reconstructed classroom and an extensive exhibition on the patriotic activity of the Polish minority in Germany. Płotowo lies about 15 km from Bytów.
