About the museum
The Diocesan Museum in Rzeszów was founded at the end of the 1990s on the initiative of Fr Franciszek Dziedzic, who became its first director and gathered many exhibits even before its official opening. The museum is housed in the building of the Bishop’s Curia at ul. Zamkowa 4 and collects objects of sacred art from parishes of the Rzeszów diocese.
The collections grew thanks to gifts from clergy, including the bishops of Rzeszów, and from collectors. Particularly valuable objects come from the collection of Bronisław Cmela, which his brother handed over to the museum in 1996. The display was set up by Fr Dziedzic and the long-serving volunteer Barbara Sierżęga, and in 2017 students of the Institute of Art History of the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) reorganised the exhibition during their placement.
The collection is dominated by works from the early modern period, especially the Baroque, but the oldest exhibit dates from the 10th century. Alongside Christian art of the Latin rite, objects of Orthodox church art are presented, as well as a small collection of contemporary art. The collections are continuously being expanded and conserved.
