About the museum

The Earth Sciences Museum grew out of the passion of the faculty’s staff, mainly geologists, who spontaneously gathered the first collections. In 1977 aluminium display cases were purchased to show the mineralogical collections. The unit, initially called the “Museum of the Earth” (Muzeum Ziemi), was formally established by a rector’s order on 28 October 1994, but it lacked legal regulations and funding.

In 1999, in connection with the construction of the faculty’s new building, the collections were packed and moved to a storage facility. At the turn of 2003 and 2004 the museum received a new room and new display cases, and after an employee was hired in 2004, work began to tidy and inventory the collection. It acquired its present professional form of exhibition after 2005.

The museum is located in the building of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Silesia at ul. Będzińska in Sosnowiec. The collections number about 4,000 specimens: rocks, minerals, fossils and meteorites. The permanent exhibitions have the character of palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, for example “Devonian – the Golden Age of Fauna and Flora”, “In the Land of the Dragon” and “Nothosaurs”. A lapidarium, an educational geological park with multi-tonne rock boulders, is being built next to the building.
