About the museum
The Regional Museum in Mielec was established on 1 January 1978 as a state institution, and its first director was Henryk Momot. Previously, for ten years, a community museum set up by TMZM had operated in the town, and it handed over a large collection of residents’ donations to the new institution. Since 1 January 1998 the museum has been part of the Local Government Culture Centre in Mielec and consists of two sites: the Museum of Regional History “Pałacyk Oborskich” (Oborski Palace) and the Museum of the History of Photography “Jadernówka”.
The main seat since 2001 has been the Oborski Palace at ul. Legionów 73. The Counts Oborski bought the Mielec estate in 1891, and in 1905, to a design by the Rzeszów architect Kazimierz Hołubowicz, a new storey in the urban “villa in the garden” style was added to an old manor house from the early 19th century. After the war the building was destroyed, and after the museum took it over it was thoroughly restored in 1993–2001.
The branch “Jadernówka” is housed in the house of the Jadern family of Mielec photographers, built in 1904–1906, with its preserved photographic gazebo with a glazed wall and roof. It has served as a museum site since 1987, and after restoration in 2010–2011 it presents the history of photography. The museum organises permanent and temporary exhibitions, museum lessons, workshops, lectures and Museum Night (Noc Muzeów), and publishes, among other things, the “Rocznik Mielecki” (Mielec Yearbook).
