About the museum
The museum is housed in a wooden gentry manor house, originally built of larch, which was erected in 1848 for Maria and Aleksander Gunter. The manor is associated with events such as the peasant uprising (rabacja) of 1846, the January Uprising and the Second World War.
The last owner of the manor and estate, Jadwiga Wolska Tumidajska, began efforts in the 1970s to create a museum in her house. After several years of renovation and conservation work, the manor was opened to visitors in 1981. The interior design refers to the second half of the 19th century: the front part serves representative functions (salon, dining room, study), the east wing served as bedrooms, and the west wing housed the kitchen and pantry.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the manor often hosted the Kraków cultural and scientific elite, among them Adam Asnyk, Stanisław Wyspiański and Lucjan Rydel. During the Second World War the manor took part in the resistance movement. A few kilometres away was the “Motyl” (Butterfly) landing ground, from which operations were carried out to take fragments of a V-2 rocket out of Poland. The museum offers an educational programme for children and young people and organises regular classical music concerts.
