About the museum
The Muzeum Archeologiczne in Wiślica was established on 20 May 1966 on the initiative of the Zespół Badań nad Polskim Średniowieczem (Research Team on the Polish Middle Ages). Its task was to gather and popularise objects obtained during archaeological excavations in Wiślica in 1949–1964, and to make accessible the remains of architecture, including the church of St Nicholas and the objects discovered in the crypts of the collegiate church.
Initially the museum was housed in a cultural centre building and in an archaeological pavilion of 1964. In 1999 the institution was closed and operated as a municipal department; from 2010 it was a local government cultural institution. Since the beginning of 2017 it has been a branch of the National Museum in Kielce.
In 2018–2022 the museum was modernised. Visitors now walk through an underground route connecting the archaeological pavilion with the reserve in the crypts of the minor basilica, and a new exhibition shows previously unexhibited objects and an interactive show about the remains of the oldest Romanesque architecture against the background of the history of Wiślica. The town is one of the few places in Poland under full conservation protection, and it is a Pomnik Historii (Monument of History).
