About the museum
The Muzeum Dwory Karwacjanów i Gładyszów w Gorlicach (Karwacjan and Gładysz Manor Houses Museum in Gorlice) was established on 31 December 2007 by resolution of the Małopolska Voivodeship Assembly as a local government cultural institution. Among others, it took over the kasztel (small castle) in Szymbark together with the Ośrodek Budownictwa Ludowego (today the Skansen Wsi Pogórzańskiej), which had been detached from the Muzeum Okręgowe w Nowym Sączu. The museum also includes the Dwór Karwacjanów in Gorlice, the maziarz homestead in Łoś and the Orthodox church in Bartne.
The Dwór Karwacjanów, a Renaissance seat of the family that founded Gorlice, was renovated in 1984–1992 and housed an art gallery. The museum collects materials on the history of the Pogórzanie and Lemko peoples, art, ethnography, folk architecture and building, and documents on the oil industry and the battle of Gorlice.
Since 1 February 2026 the Dwór Karwacjanów and the kasztel in Szymbark have been closed to visitors for renovation as part of the project “Małopolski dwór” (“Małopolska Manor House”). During this time visitors can see temporary exhibitions in the Galeria Sztuki “Piekarska 2” (“Piekarska 2” Art Gallery) and the permanent exhibition “Axentowicz. Dziedzictwo artysty” (“Axentowicz. The Artist’s Heritage”), which since June 2026 has been shown in a new space at 4 ul. Józefa Piłsudskiego in Gorlice.
