About the museum
The first exhibitions of war memorabilia from the Battle of Gorlice were set up in Gorlice as early as 1919 and 1935, and after the end of the Nazi occupation in 1945 the idea of a permanent institution revived, supported by the Main Board of the PTTK. Members of the local PTTK branch and regional enthusiasts then renovated a single-storey townhouse from 1780–1790 at ul. Wąska, the oldest residential building in the town. The museum officially opened on 22 July 1957, and its first head was Alfred Wacławski.
At the beginning the museum occupied just two rooms. In time it obtained the neighbouring building on lease from the town and a hall for temporary exhibitions, and in 1976 further rooms on the upper floor were made available, where an ethnographic exhibition on the Pogórzanie and Lemkos was shown.
At present the permanent exhibitions are housed in the historic cellars, on the ground floor and on the upper floor of two connected buildings, and cover four themes: the history of the town of Gorlice, the beginnings of the oil industry and the activity of Ignacy Łukasiewicz in Gorlice, war memorabilia from the Battle of Gorlice in 1915, and the ethnography of the Pogórzanie and Lemkos. The museum provides a free audio guide in a mobile app and runs museum lessons.
