About the museum

The Muzeum Przemysłu Naftowego i Etnografii (Museum of the Oil Industry and Ethnography) in Libusza was founded in 1977 by Anna and Tadeusz Pabis, former oil industry workers and lovers of tradition. They wanted to preserve the memory of the people who worked in the oil industry in the Pogórze foothills, where the first shafts were sunk in the 19th century. The museum is a private institution, now looked after by the family; visitors are guided by the founders’ daughter, Elżbieta Dąbrowska.

The collection holds more than a thousand oil and ethnographic exhibits. It includes, among others, a kerosene distillery, a mine forge from the mid-19th century, ceramic kerosene containers, paraffin moulds, reconstructions of shafts, drilling and extraction tools, documentation of old mines, maps, photographs, and notes and diaries of oil workers. The exhibition presents 500 biographical entries on distinguished oil workers and on the first fifty diggers who worked in the shafts between 1852 and 1890.

The ethnographic section includes more than two hundred exhibits of the folk culture of the Podkarpacie region: furniture, tools, everyday objects, paintings, clothing, as well as a gramophone and wartime flasks.
