About the museum
The Muzeum Pszczelarstwa in Stróże was founded in 2000 by Anna and Janusz Kasztelewicz, owners of the beekeeping farm “Sądecki Bartnik”. In May 2000 they bought a collection of hives from the Kraków beekeeper Bogdan Szymusik, which became the basis of the exhibition. The museum bears his name, and Szymusik is its honorary patron.
The collection includes more than 100 hives of several kinds: log hives (kłody), figurative hives (ule figuralne), sznoz hives, frame hives and straw baskets. The most valuable are a log hive for five colonies called “Król” (The King) and a sznoz hive by Dzierżon from 1822, both listed as monuments. There are also figurative hives such as “Saint Ambrose”, the patron of beekeepers, and “The Devil”, which according to tradition protected the bees and the beekeepers. Reconstructed display huts show tools such as honey extractors, smokers and queen-rearing cages, and outside stands the Carpathian Millennium Bee Tree, a several-metre tree trunk considered the tallest in Poland.
The museum has the character of an open-air museum: nearby are the playground “Wioska pszczółki” (Little Bee Village), a small zoo with horses and ostriches, the Bartna Chata tavern and a shop with beekeeping products. Visitors may also paint and take photographs in the neighbouring Zaremba family park (park Zarembów), and on the first weekend of July the Biesiada u Bartnika (Beekeeper's Feast) takes place.
