About the museum
The Zagroda Maziarska in Łosie opened on 31 October 2009 as a new branch of the “Dwory Karwacjanów i Gładyszów” (Karwacjanów and Gładyszów Manors) Museum in Gorlice. It is a traditional Lemko homestead preserved on its original site, adjoining buildings from the early 20th century and an active Greek Catholic church from 1810. The museum complex is an example of Lemko architecture in Łosie from the late 19th century: it includes a chyża (Lemko cottage) from 1899, a barn and a granary, and the only relocated object is a chyża from Bartne dating from 1928.
Łosie is a Lemko village whose inhabitants traditionally made their living as itinerant grease traders. In the past this meant kołomaź, the axle grease for wooden wagons, obtained by dry distillation of pine waste. From the mid-19th century, with the development of the oil industry, the people of Łosie switched to technical lubricants and petroleum oils. In 1934, 335 grease wagons set out on their routes; after the Second World War the trade collapsed as a result of the resettlements under Operation Vistula (Akcja “Wisła”), and the last grease trader set out on the road in the 1970s.
The main theme of the permanent exhibition, prepared by the ethnographer Maria Brylak-Załuska, is grease trading presented against the background of the traditional culture of Western Łemkowszczyzna. Exhibits, maps, photographs and display boards are shown, together with non-agricultural occupations of the region such as spoon-carving (łyżkarstwo) and tar-making (dziegciarstwo). Original grease wagons stand in the outbuilding, including the wagon of Dymitr Karel, and the granary houses the exhibition “Relikty” (Relics) with elements of non-existent Lemko churches.
