About the museum
The Muzeum Fauny i Flory Morskiej i Śródlądowej (Museum of Marine and Inland Fauna and Flora) in Jaworze operates at Primary School No. 2 and exists thanks to the commitment of the pupils and teachers of that school. It was created thanks to the generosity of Boatswain Erwin Pasterny, who was born in Jaworze Średnie in 1928, trained at maritime schools and sailed the seas of the world.
The institution began its activity in 1969. Thanks to many years of cooperation with the Institute of Biology of the Pedagogical University in Kraków, most of the exhibits are well preserved, and young people take part in camps and thematic meetings. The Stowarzyszenie Przyjaciół Muzeum (Association of Friends of the Museum) operates alongside the museum and promotes maritime culture, local history and nature.
The collections include, among others, a sea turtle, sharks (including a hammerhead shark), octopuses, molluscs and sea urchins. All exhibits can be viewed up close, and the exhibition hall contains a boat from which one can listen to stories about sea animals. The museum also has aquariums with a total capacity of 10 thousand litres, and a butterfly house with live butterflies and other arthropods, where all developmental stages can be seen.
