About the museum
The Muzeum Fonografii (Phonography Museum) in Niepołomice has operated since 2011 and is part of the Małopolskie Centrum Dźwięku i Słowa (Małopolska Centre of Sound and Word) at ul. Zamkowa 4. It tells the story of recording and playing back sound, from the age of the phonograph to equipment from the late 20th century.
The exhibition is arranged chronologically in eight rooms, furnished in the style of their periods. The interiors have authentic furniture, carpets, curtains, net curtains and wallpaper, and contain gramophones, pick-ups, crystal radios, reel-to-reel tape recorders, the first Polish Walkmans and televisions. According to Radio Kraków’s report from 2018, the collection numbered about 150 exhibits, the oldest of which were then 130 years old.
The museum shows equipment familiar from the homes of several generations, so a visit is also a nostalgic journey through interiors that older visitors remember from their own lives.
