About the museum

The Muzeum Niepołomickie (Niepołomice Museum) is a municipal cultural institution established in 2001 on the basis of the archive of the work of Włodzimierz Puchalski, an outstanding nature photographer, filmmaker and traveller. It occupies the first floor of the Royal Castle in Niepołomice, built in the 1340s on the initiative of Casimir the Great.

The castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance under Sigismund the Old and restored after a fire around 1550, and it was called the “Little Wawel”. Polish kings came here to hunt in the Niepołomice Forest. In the 18th and 20th centuries it served as barracks, and after the war various institutions were housed in it. A thorough renovation was carried out in the 1990s.

The museum has permanent exhibitions: the gallery “Sukiennice w Niepołomicach 2. Znane i nieznane” (Sukiennice in Niepołomice 2. Known and Unknown), with over 130 paintings and 25 sculptures by Polish artists of the 19th century from the collections of the National Museum in Kraków; the Gabinet Włodzimierza Puchalskiego (Cabinet of Włodzimierz Puchalski); hunting halls; the exhibition “Skarby niepołomickiej parafii” (Treasures of the Niepołomice Parish); and the display “Niepołomice. Miasto, czas i ludzie” (Niepołomice: Town, Time and People), on the history of the town from the First Partition to the outbreak of the Second World War. Educational sessions have been prepared for children and young people.
