About the museum
The museum was established in May 1999 at the primary school in Gwizdały. Warsaw collector Witold Tchórzewski donated to the school his collection, which included 39 whistles, 12 fujarki (shepherds' flutes) and one ocarina. Further exhibits came from donations and from the purchase of collections from other collectors, and today the museum holds several thousand whistles.
The exhibition includes classic whistles of wood, clay and metal, trade whistles (sports, railway, police and military), technical whistles, for example from steam locomotives and kettles, and wind instruments such as fujarki, ligawki (hunting horns) and trumpets. Alongside exhibits from Poland there are whistles from Europe, the Americas, Asia and many other parts of the world; the oldest is about 400 years old.
The museum runs pottery and ceramics workshops organised by the curator Roman Kuzelyak, and since 2012 a sculpture plein-air has taken place in Gwizdały. The Łochów commune bought a plot so that the museum can receive a separate building near the school.
