About the museum
The open-air museum in Brańszczyk was created on the initiative of the commune. In 2014 the Brańszczyk commune obtained co-funding from the Rural Development Programme to set up the open-air museum beside the planned St James Way route to Łomża. The Wyszków County Council granted free use of part of the plot belonging to the Social Care Home, and historic buildings from the surrounding villages were moved to the site.
The open-air museum contains wooden cottages from Trzcianka, a beekeeper’s house, a barn from the Tuchlin forester’s lodge with agricultural machines from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and a forge moved from Udrzyn in 2015. The interiors of the cottages are furnished with objects donated by the commune’s residents, such as spinning wheels, chests, bread troughs and decorative striped textiles. In the house from Trzcianka visitors can see the exhibitions “Od sochy do kombajnu” (From the Plough to the Combine Harvester) and a farmstead of Jan and Janina Uchal, with miniatures of farm equipment, as well as an exhibition devoted to the ethnographer and museologist Maria Żywirska.
The open-air museum presents the culture of the White Kurpie, groups of settlers from the Green Kurpie, known for their own costumes, customs and architecture. The commune plans to expand the facility into an ethnographic and natural park, and workshops and events, such as harvest festivals (dożynki), take place on the site.
