About the museum
Construction of the municipal coal gasworks in Górowo Iławeckie began after a decision of the municipal authorities (magistrat) in 1907, and the plant was opened on 13 September 1908. It stood on Góra Zarazy (Plague Hill), where the victims of the plague of 1710 were buried. Gas was made from coal delivered from a mine, and until 1925 it supplied 42 street lamps and around 400 households.
After 1945 the gasworks was devastated and most of its equipment was removed. It was restarted in 1964, with missing parts supplied from other gasworks, and operated until 1992. In 1992–1994 former employees adapted the building into a museum, which opened in 1994; in the same year the building was entered in the register of monuments. During the works an original brick floor was discovered in the furnace room, which can be seen during the tour.
The museum shows the complete technological process of gas production, with furnaces, control and measuring apparatus and a large gas holder. In the former coal store there are gas meters, pressure gauges, cookers, heaters, irons and gas lamps, as well as documents and photographs. The museum belongs to the Polska Spółka Gazownictwa (Polish Gas Company).
